Alfa Laval, global leader in heat transfer, separation and fluid handling, and Bisviridi, a new company within the BioteCH4 Group, the UK’s leading biogas plant operator, are collaborating to increase the sustainability potential of organic food waste recycling.

The partnership will see Alfa Laval’s state-of-the-art Prodec Oil Plus decanter, designed for efficient oil separation, combined with anaerobic digestion to convert waste oil and fats into biofuel. This groundbreaking process, developed and patented by Bisviridi, produces bio-crude oil, an environmentally friendly alternative to oil-based fuels.

Lee Dobinson, Chief Commercial Officer of Bisviridi, highlights the value of the partnership, stating: “ The fluctuations in oil prices in recent years and the need for large biodiesel companies to find new sources of sustainable waste oil streams have led us to identify an opportunity to exploit of this waste and diversify our company’s production while increasing revenue and sustainability. We are pleased to work with Alfa Laval and combine our expertise in anaerobic digestion with their successful history in separation technology to further refine this process and potentially achieve large-scale global production .”

Reclaim every precious drop

The Alfa Laval Prodec Oil Plus decanter, a key component in the Bisviridi process, can be seamlessly integrated into any biogas plant and offers numerous advantages. Before methanogenesis, the decanter efficiently extracts oils and fats from the organic waste. The remaining components can be returned to the fermentation plant; the impact on biogas production is minimal. The resulting bio-crude oil has an impressive purity level of up to 99.5%, making it an ideal feedstock for refineries to produce biofuels for the SAF market.

The recent collaboration with BioteCH4 allows the biogas plants to achieve a significant production capacity of up to 300 liters of oil per hour and more, while seamlessly expanding and diversifying the revenue streams of biogas plant operators. The innovative design of the Prodec Oil Plus decanter ensures simple operation and maintenance, thus minimizing the payback period and overall costs for biogas plant operators. It is available as a standalone component or as a plug-and-play skid, allowing for effortless integration into existing biogas plants and processes.
